Lera Hilton Whitson of Marion, age 97, passed away Monday, May 15th. She was born January 7, 1920 in Catawba County to Ernest Aubrey Hilton and Maude Cobb Hilton. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 65 years, Thomas "Ed" Whitson (March 2005), her parents, and her siblings Ernestine Sigmon, Mozelle Wood, Tommie Shuford, and Hunter Hilton. Lera Hilton Whitson of Marion, age 97, passed away Monday, May 15th. She was born January 7, 1920 in Catawba County to Ernest Aubrey Hilton and Maude Cobb Hilton. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 65 years, Thomas "Ed" Whitson (March 2005), her parents, and her siblings Ernestine Sigmon, Mozelle Wood, Tommie Shuford, and Hunter Hilton. She is survived by her daughter Linda W. Smith and husband Bob, Susan W. Tripp and husband Chuck, and son John W. Whitson and wife Renee, grandchildren Robert Smith (Tiffany), Valerie Smith Parrish (Clayton), Ashley Whitson Beach (Jonathan), Jeff Hallyburton, Lauren Hallyburton Patin (Paul), and two step grandsons David Tripp (Brittany) and Daniel Tripp (Kristen); and six great-grandchildren, Sydney, Mackenzie, Sadie, Abigail, Darcy and Liam. She is also survived by many loving nephews and nieces, especially Gale Jones.
She was very involved with her family and her church, St. Mark's UMC, of which she was a charter member and played the organ for many years. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. From childhood, she worked with her parents and siblings in their Hilton pottery business. She was employed for many years at Belk in Marion and assisted her husband Ed in his refrigeration business. She was an avid seamstress and loved fabric arts and crafts. She was dedicated to her Christian faith.
A Celebration of Mrs. Whitson's Life will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday May 20 at St. Mark's United Methodist Church with Rev Kim Clardy and Chuck Tripp officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. A private interment will be held at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, at a later date.
