Thomas L. Johnson, age 90, of Marion, NC, passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Johnson was born in Buncombe Co., NC on July 28, 1926, to the late Jobie and Bessie Davis Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Marion . He was retired from his position as supervisor at Cohoma Knitting Mill and he served his country proudly in the United States Army during World War II and earned...

Thomas L. Johnson, age 90, of Marion, NC, passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Johnson was born in Buncombe Co., NC on July 28, 1926, to the late Jobie and Bessie Davis Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Marion . He was retired from his position as supervisor at Cohoma Knitting Mill and he served his country proudly in the United States Army during World War II and earned the World War II Victory Medal.

Mr. Johnson was well known and respected in the Old Fort community, as he spent many years coaching youth sports. He was past President of the Old Fort Youth Activities. He loved sports and he participated and won several Gold and Silver medals in the Senior Games. His favorite teams were the St. Louis Cardinals, Washington Redskins, NC State basketball team and University of North Carolina football team.

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife, Christina "Tena" Johnson; a son, Steven Johnson; brothers, Jobie Johnson, Jr. and Warren Johnson; sisters, Carolyn Justice, Evelyn Jannuzzio, and Utha Early.

Surviving Mr. Johnson are his daughter, Debbie (Jerry) Gardin, of Marion; a sister, Hazel Helms, of Marion; grandsons, Thomas (April) Gardin and Wesley (Jasmine) Gardin both of Marion; and great-grandchildren Chandler, Braden, and Gabe Gardin, all of Marion.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Kirksey Funeral Chapel in Old Fort with Reverend Dennis Burleson and Pastor Chuck Tripp officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the funeral service at Cherry Springs Memorial Park in Old Fort.
